Michigan Apple Pie

Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, divided
  • 3 tablespoons ice water
  • 5 granny smith apples
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 1/4 cups flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2/3 cup unsalted butter

Directions

  1. In medium chilled bowl, begin dough by sifting together flour and salt.

  2. Using a pastry blender, cut half of the stick of butter into the flour mixture until it resembles pea like consistency

  3. Then cut in the remaining half stick of butter, adding 1 tablespoon of water at a time, gently stirring mixture with a fork until dough-like mixture begins forming. Do not overwork dough

  4. Form dough into disk shape and refrigerate for 1/2 hour.

  5. Remove dough from refrigerator and roll out to 1/8 inch thickness and 1 inch beyond pan size.

  6. Place in 9" deep dish pie shell, flute edges and chill.

  7. Preheat oven to 375
  8. While dough is chilling, prepare filling and topping.

  9. In a large bowl, toss together the apples, sugar and cinnamon for filling. Spoon apples into pie shell

  10. In large bowl, combine the flour and sugar for the topping.

  11. Cut in the butter using a pastry blender until the desired consistency is achieved.

  12. Sprinkle topping over apples in pie shell

  13. Bake for 50 minutes or until apples are soft and the topping is a light brown.

  14. Remove from oven and place on a cooling rack
