Ingredients

  • 1 can lye
  • 1/2 cup bleach
  • 3/4 cup borax
  • 3 quarts minus 5 Tbsp. water
  • 9 cups grease or lard

Directions

  1. To achieve the whitest soap, grease should be “washed” before using. To wash, place grease in 2-3 quarts water in a large container and bring to a boil. Let cool until grease is solid enough to remove.
  2. Dissolve lye in water in a large enamel or cast iron pan. ( Lye will ruin other containers). Stir until lye is dissolved, then add beach and borax and stir until dissolved. Add grease and stir constantly for 15 minutes. Set the soap aside and give it a good stir about every 30 minutes for the rest of the day. It will thicken gradually until it is hard to stir, but keep stirring. It is stirring that makes the soap granular.
