Brown Bread

Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup corn meal
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 1/4 cup oil

Directions

  1. In large bowl, combine dry ingredients and raisins.

  2. In separate bowl, combine buttermilk, molasses and oil. Stir into dry ingredients, mixing thoroughl. spoon into 3 well greased coffee cans. Cover with foil and secure with string or bands. Set on rack in large pot an d add boiling water to reach half way up cans. Cover and steam 1 1/2 hours. Add water as necessary to maintain level.
