Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 3 to 4 cups bread flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup vegetable shortening
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 1 tbsp. Fleischmann's Quick, Rapid Rise, or Bread Machine Yeast
  • 2 cups warm water

Directions

  1. Stir together whole wheat flour, sugar, shortening, salt and yeast in a large bowl. Stir in warm water. Beat for a minute, then stir in enough bread flour to make a manageable dough.

  2. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured board. Knead about ten minutes (or about 8 minutes with dough hook). Place in lightly greased bowl and let rise 40-60 minutes – until doubled.

  3. Grease a large cookie sheet. Punch down dough. Divide in half. Let rest 5 minutes. Shape each half into a round, slightly flat loaf on the opposite corners of the cookie sheet. Cover and let rise in a warm place 40-50 minutes or until doubled.

  4. Preheat oven to 375 F.

  5. Make a 1/2 inch deep slashes across each loaf in lattice design. Sprinkle each loaf bread flour. Bake 35-40 minutes until loaves are deep, golden brown and sound hollow when tapped. Cool on a wire rack. 2 loaves
