(from hughbert’s recipe box)

Tasty pretzels! I only had my first pretzel a few months ago and I’ve never looked back :)

Prep time: 35 minutes
Cook time: 10 minutes
Serves 6 people

Ingredients

  • 1 tsp instant yeast
  • 1 tbsp malt powder or brown sugar
  • 2-3 cups unbleached flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup warm milk

Directions

  1. Combine all dry ingredients except flour and mix

  2. Add 2 cups of flour and mix

  3. Add milk and mix

  4. Add more flour as needed to get one doughy ball

  5. Knead for 5-10 mins

  6. Cut into 6 equal sized pieces

  7. Roll each piece into a short log, around 1 cm in diameter

  8. Turn on oven to 200C

  9. Leave dough to sit for 5-10 minutes

  10. Continue rolling and stretching

  11. Leave dough to sit once more for 5-10 minutes

  12. Continue rolling as needed to obtain a length of around 40 cm, then form into pretzel shape

  13. Heat 1 cm of water in a shallow pan (e.g. frying pan)

  14. When boiling, add each pretzel one by one, for around 15-20 seconds on each side, drying on a paper towel

  15. Pretzels can be frozen at this stage for later consumption; only cook what you want to eat now!

  16. Place pretzel on baking paper on a baking tray, and sprinkle salt or other seasonings to your liking (not too much salt otherwise these pretzels might make you thirsty)

  17. Bake for 10-15 minutes, until golden brown

  18. Enjoy while toasty hot!
