Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1 1/2 c. water
  • 1/4. tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. nutmeg
  • 3 Tbsp. butter
  • 2 c. flour
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2/3 c. shortening
  • 1/2 c. milk
  • 6 baking apples, cored, peeled, and sliced

Directions

  1. Combine sugar, water, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a saucepan. Bring to boil. Remove from heat and add 3 Tbsp. butter.

  2. In a mixing bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, and salt. Cut in shortening. Add milk and stir until just moistened.

  3. Roll out about 1/4 inch thick into an 18×12-inch rectangle. Cut into 6-inch squares.

  4. Place one apple in each square (if slicing apples by hand, use 1/2 apple per dumpling). Sprinkle generously with sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg, and dot with butter.

  5. Seal dough over apple. Place apples in ungreased 9×13 baking pan. Pour syrup over dumplings and sprinkle with sugar.

  6. Bake at 375 for 35 minutes.
