All-Occasion Cutout Cookies

Ingredients

  • 1/2 c butter or margaine, room temperature
  • 1 c sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2 or 3 Tbs milk
  • 1-1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 2 to 2 1/4 c flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • Icing
  • assorted decorations such as candies, raisins, or colored sugar crystals

Directions

  1. In a medium bowl, beat together butter or margarine, sugar, egg, milk and vanilla until light and fluffy.

  2. Add flour, baking powder and salt, beating until blended.

  3. Divide dough into two equal portions.

  4. Wrap (wax paper) and refrigerate until firm, 1 hour or longer.

  5. Prior to baking, allow dough to stand at room temperature until soft enough to roll easily.

  6. To bake cookies, preheat oven to 375F

  7. On a lightly floure surface, (don’t use anything other than flour) roll dough 1/4 inch thick.

  8. With lightly floured cookies cutters, cut into desired shapes.

  9. Place 1 inch apart on ungreased baking sheets.

  10. Bake 7 to 10 minutes or until edges are golden. Remove cookies from baking sheets; cool on racks.

  11. Decorate as desired with icing and decorations.

  12. Let stand until set.

  13. Makes about 48 (2-1/2") cookies.
