Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups rave/suji farina/cream of wheat
  • 2 T vegetable oil
  • 1 t mustard seeds
  • 2 dried red chilies
  • 1 t Tamcon tamarind paste
  • 1/4 t turmeric powder
  • 1/4 t chana dhal (kadle bele)
  • 1/4 t uru dhal (udhin bele)
  • 1/4 cup onion, chopped
  • 2 T cilantro, chopped
  • 1/2 lime, juiced
  • 1 1/2 c water
  • Salt to taste

Directions

  1. In saute pan over medium heat, add 1 T oil. Roast rave in oil, stirring often, for 5-7 min. Remove rave and reserve for later.

  2. Add remaining oil to saute pan along with mustard seeds. Allow to pop. Reduce heat to med-lo

  3. Add red chilies, followed by chana and uru dhals. Allow to brown slightly – these burn easily, so watch them closely.

  4. Add onions to pan and saute until clear. If you would like to add extra vegetable, add them now according to cook time.

  5. Add a little water, as necessary to steam the veggies and prevent burning.

  6. Add cilantro, turmeric, tamcon and salt. Note for more flavor add sambaar pudi or palya pudi now.

  7. Add remaining water and bring to a simmer.

  8. Add in roasted rave and stir. Cover and allow to cook.

  9. Finish with lime juice.
