Grandma’s Sheet Cake Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 cup sugar
  • 2 cup flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 sticks margarine
  • 4 Tablespoon cocoa
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • dash of red food coloring
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 stick margarine
  • 4 tablespoons cocoa
  • 6 tablespoons buttermilk

Directions

  1. In a bowl combine:

  2. 2 cup sugar

  3. 2 cup flour

  4. 1/2 teaspoon salt

  5. In a saucepan bring the following ingredients to a boil:

  6. 2 sticks margarine

  7. 4 Tablespoon cocoa

  8. 1 cup water

  9. Pour the boiled mixture into the bowl with flour and sugar.

  10. Add to this mixture:

  11. 1 teaspoon of baking soda that has been dissolved with about 1/2 teaspoon of warm water (grandma dissolves the soda in water so that you don’t have to worry about a clump of soda in the cake)

  12. Combine then add to the above:

  13. 1/2 cup buttermilk

  14. dash of red food coloring

  15. 2 eggs

  16. 1 teaspoon vanilla

  17. Beat all of the above together.

  18. Pour into a greased sheet cake pan (11″×17″×1″ pan). Grease pan with a little margarine.

  19. ICING

  20. In a saucepan bring the following ingredients to a boil:

  21. 1 stick margarine

  22. 4 tablespoons cocoa

  23. 6 tablespoons buttermilk

  24. Add to boiled mixture 1 box of powdered sugar (1 box equals 1 pound) and 1 teaspoon vanilla and beat all together.

  25. While cake is still warm (not hot), put icing on the cake. Icing will be warm.
