(from kckern’s recipe box)

Ingredients

  • 2.2 pounds flour
  • 2 tablespoons yeast
  • 150 grams of lard (may substitute vegetable shortening)
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • Warm water

Directions

  1. Place the flour in a heap on the counter, make a hole in the middle.

  2. In a cup, mix the yeast, a little flour, warm water and a pinch of sugar (so that the yeast will ferment, about 10 minutes).

  3. Mix this with the flour, add the lard, salt warm water and knead it until you have formed a smooth dough.

  4. Cover it with a clean cloth for 30 minutes in a warm area.

  5. Form individual balls. Flatten them, and poke with a fork.

  6. Place them on a previously greased tray and allow them to rise until double their size (about 30 minutes).

  7. Bake about 20 minutes until lightly brown on top at an oven temperature of about 350 degrees farenheit.
