Croque-Monsieur

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter (plus more for bread)
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup grated gruyere cheese (plus 8 slices)
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 8 thick slices rustic bread
  • 12 slices of ham
  • Dijon mustard (for bread)

Directions

  1. Melt butter in a saucepan over med-heat.

  2. Whisk in flour; add milk and bring to a simmer

  3. Cook, whisking frequently, until sauce thickens (5 mins) and remove from heat.

  4. Add grated cheeses and whisk until melted and smooth

  5. Butter bread and arrange in half slices (buttered side down) on a rimmed baking sheet.

  6. Top each with 2 slices of gruyere and 3 slices of ham.

  7. Spread mustard onto unbuttered sides of remaining bread.

  8. Place on top of ham (buttered side up)

  9. Preheat broiler and heat grill pan or skillet over med-heat.

  10. Cook each sandwich until golden brown and cheese melts (5 mins per side)

  11. Return to baking sheet and spoon 1/3 cup sauce over top each sandwich; broil until tops are bubbling and golden brown (3 mins)
