Basic Broccoli

Ingredients

  • 1 stalk broccoli
  • 1/2 cup water
  • salt
  • black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon butter (optional)

Directions

  1. Rise the broccoli. Trim and discard any leaves and the bottom 1 inch of the stem. Peel and discard 1/4 inch of the tough outer surface of the stem. Slice the remaining stem into 1/4 inch discs. Cut the large buds (florets), into 2 to 3 bite size pieces each. Leave the smaller buds whole.

  2. Put the broccoli pieces in a small pot, add the water and cook, covered, over medium heat for about 5 minutes, or until a sharp knife penetrates a stalk without much resistance. The broccoli will still be bright green.

  3. Drain the broccoli and sprinkle with salt and black pepper. If you want the extra flavor, add the butter now. Serve immediately.
