Ingredients

  • 2-1/4 - 2-1/2 pounds cooking apples
  • 1 cup plus 2 Tablespoons flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 8 Tablespoons (1 stick) Butter
  • 3/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 3/4 cup chopped walnuts and/or pecans (Optional)
  • 1 Tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • Whipped Cream or Ice Cream (to top - optional)

Directions

  1. 1, Butter a shallow 1-1/2 or 2 quart baking dish or casserole. Preheat oven to 350 F for a glass dish, 375F for a metal or ceramic dish.

  2. Peel the apples and cut them in quarters. Cut out the cores, making sure to remove all seeds and hard matter. Cut each quarter in 3 long slices and put the slices in a large bowl.

  3. Add 1/4 cup of the sugar, the cloves, cinnamon and lemon juice to the apples and mix well. Spread the apples in the baking dish.

  4. Stir together the flour, salt and remaining 3/4 cup of the sugar. Cut the butter into the flour until the mixture has a crumbly texture. Stir in the nuts. Spread the mixture evenly on top of the apples.

  5. Bake for 50 – 60 minutes, until the apples are tender and the crust is crisp and lightly browned. Serve warm. Top with whipped cream or ice cream, if you like.
