mom’s French Bread

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups water
  • 2 tsp W sugar
  • 2 pkg. yeast (2 TBSPS)
  • 2 TBSP. w sugar
  • 1 TBSP salt
  • 2 TBSP veg. oil
  • 6 cups flour
  • cornmeal
  • 1 egg
  • 1 TBSP milk

Directions

  1. Don’t use a mixmaster

  2. Combine sugar and water and sprinkle the yeast on top let rise for 10 mins.

  3. Stir the yeast mixture with a fork and add sugar ,salt and oil. In a large bowl, put 3 cups of flour and make a well in the middle. Add the yeast mixture, with a fork, beat for 2 mins. Then add remainder flour, one cup at a time amd mix well. Let rise for 10 mins.

  4. Punch down and let rise another 10 mins. Do 2 more times. Cut dough into half and shape into 2 loaves

  5. Brush top with the egg and make gashes on top

  6. Let rise for 1/2 hour

  7. Bake lowest rack at 400 for 25 min.
