Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon hot water
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

  2. Cream together the butter, white sugar, and brown sugar until smooth. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla. I usually add chocolate chips and nuts at this point.

  3. Dissolve baking soda in hot water. Add to batter along with salt. Stir in flour, do not overmix. Drop by large spoonfuls onto ungreased pans.

  4. Bake for about 10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until edges are nicely browned.

  5. Personal notes: Could be a little too sweet, so I’d reduce the sugar a little. I also prefer using double-acting baking powder because it’s more foolproof in the case of overmixing. Reduce flour up to 1/4 cup to increase chewiness. Vanilla extract could also be reduced if you don’t like overpowering vanilla scent.
