  • Pear Mixture:
  • 1/4 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar or 1/4 cup light brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup crystallized ginger, minced
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 5 cups peeled and cored sliced pears
  • Crumb Topping:
  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 3/4 cup ground walnuts
  • 6 tablespoons salted butter, chilled

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°; grease a 9-inch square pan or 9-inch deep dish glass pie plate.

  2. Pear Mixture: in a large bowl, combine the brown sugar, ginger, lemon juice, nutmeg, and flour.

  3. Add in the pears and toss them gently in the mixture.

  4. Spoon the pear mixture into the prepared pan and set aside.

  5. Crumb Topping: in a small bowl, combine the flour, sugar, walnuts, and butter; blend until mixture is crumbly.

  6. Top fruit evenly with the crumb mixture; place the pan on a cookie sheet to catch any drippings.

  7. Bake for 1 hour or until the crumb topping starts to brown and the fruit is bubbly.
