Waldorf Red Velvet Cake

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups shortening
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 Tablespoons cocoa
  • 2 ounces red food coloring (1/3 cup)
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon vinegar
  • Icing

Directions

  1. Cream shortening, sugar, and eggs.

  2. Make a paste of cocoa and red food coloring and add to creamed mixture.

  3. Add flour and buttermilk and vanilla and mix.

  4. Mix soda, vinegar in separate cup. Add to batter and blend.

  5. Bake 350° for 30 minutes in 2 greased and floured 9” pans.

  6. Let cool for 10 minutes and remove from pans and cool on cookie rack. Frost when cool. (Typically a cream cheese icing, sprinkled with red sugar.)
