Swedish Meatballs

(from JenniferGM’s recipe box)

There’s nothing Swedish about these, but they are delicious! Grandma Gregory won a prize for this recipe. There are different notes on procedures, so it’s noted in the recipe.

Ingredients

  • Meatballs
  • 1 pound ground meat
  • 1 egg
  • 12 saltines, crushed
  • 1 Tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 Tablespoons chopped onion
  • 1/4 teaspoon thyme
  • Cooking
  • Flour
  • Butter
  • Sauce
  • 1 can tomato soup OR 3/4 cup catsup
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 2 Tablespoons sour cream

Directions

  1. Combine ingredients for meatballs and mix well. Roll into small balls (walnut size).

  2. Shake about 5 or 6 at a time in flour. Shake off excess flour. Brown lightly in butter.

  3. When brown on all sides add about ½ to ¾ cup catsup (another version of her recipe calls for tomato soup). Then add about 1 ½ cups water. Simmer low about ¾ hour covered.

  4. If you have some sour cream or yogurt, you can add about 2 Tablespoons to the mixture or before you serve the sauce. Stir the sauce well.
