Spaghetti With Sauce Italiano

Ingredients

  • 1 lb bulk Italian sausage or 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 cup chopped onion (1 large)
  • 2 garlic cloves , minced
  • 2 (14 1/2 ounce) cans diced tomatoes , undrained
  • 2 (4 ounce) cans mushroom stems and pieces , drained
  • 1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 -2 tablespoon snipped fresh oregano (or 2 t. dried Italian seasoning, crushed)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (to taste)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper (to taste)
  • 1 cup chopped green bell pepper (1 large)
  • 12 -16 ounces dried spaghetti or 12 -16 ounces linguine
  • parmesan cheese (shredded or grated)

Directions

  1. In a big skillet, cook meat, onion, and garlic over medium heat until meat is browned and onion is tender; drain off fat.

  2. Meanwhile, in a 4 quart slow cooker, combine tomatoes, mushrooms, tomato paste, bay leaf, oregano, salt, and pepper; stir in meat mixture.

  3. Cover and cook on LOW for 8-10 hours or on HIGH for4-5 hours.

  4. Discard bay leaf.

  5. Turn off cooker; add in bell pepper; cover and let stand for 5 minutes.

  6. Meanwhile, cook pasta in boiling, lightly salted water according to package directions; ;drain.

  7. Taste sauce and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper.

  8. Spoon meat mixture over pasta; sprinkle with cheese.
