Strawberries with Custard Sauce

Ingredients

  • 2 Cups milk
  • 5 egg yolks
  • 2/3 Cup sugar
  • 1/8 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 4 Cups strawberry halves

Directions

  1. Place milk in top of a double boiler; bring water to a boil. Cook until milk is thoroughly heated; stirring frequently. Remove from heat and set aside.

  2. Beat egg yolks, sugar, and salt at medium speed of an electric mixer until thickened. Gradually stir about one-fourth of hot milk into egg mixture; add to remaining milk, stirring constantly.

  3. Cook custard mixture in double boiler over low heat, stirring occasionally, 30 minutes or until mixture thickens. Remove from heat; stir in vanilla.

  4. Cool completely, stirring occasionally.

  5. TO STORE: Refrigerate in a tightly covered container up to 3 days.

  6. TO SERVE: Spoon strawberries into individual dessert dishes. Drizzle custard sauce over strawberries.
