Ingredients

  • 2 pkgs. active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 4 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1-1/2 t salt
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1/2 cup warm milk
  • 1/2 stick butter
  • 1 egg
  • Filling
  • 1-1/4 sticks butter, softened
  • 1-1/2 cups finely chopped onion
  • 1-1/2 T parmesan cheese
  • 1-1/2 T poppy seeds
  • 1-1/2 t garlic powder or garlic flakes
  • 1-1/2 t paprika

Directions

  1. Dissolve the yeast in 1/4 cup warm water. Add 2 cups flour, salt, sugar, 1/2 cup water, milk, butter, and egg. Blend at low speed two minutes, then beat at medium speed two more minutes. By hand, stir in the other 2 cups flour to form a soft dough. Cover and let rise 45-60 minutes or until double in size. Stir the dough down and toss on a floured board. Knead until no longer sticky. Roll out to 18“x24” and cover with filling. Cut lengthwise into three 6“x24” strips. Roll each strip up tightly, like a cinnamon roll, beginning on the long side. Braid the three strips together, sealing the ends and sides. Place on a greased cookie sheet and let rise until double in bulk. Bake at 350 for 30 to 35 minutes or until done.
