Ingredients

  • 2 T. butter (soft)
  • 1-1/2 C. milk
  • 1 C. cream
  • 3 whole eggs
  • Salt & pepper
  • 1 loaf bread (Asiago or other French bread)
  • 1-2 C. cheese, shredded (Asiago or other cheese shredded)

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 325°. Brush the sides and bottom of 8-9” baking dish or casserole dish with softened butter.

  2. In a bowl, whisk together the milk, cream, eggs, salt and pepper and set aside.

  3. Cut the bread in thin, even slices, approximately 3/4” thick. Place a layer of bread slices on the bottom of the prepared dish. Sprinkle a layer of shredded cheese to cover bread completely.

  4. Repeat layers of bread and cheese for as many layers as dish allows, then pour custard mixture over the top of the strata. Cover strata and refrigerate for 15 minutes, allowing the bread slices to soak in custard mixture.

  5. Place the pan on a cookie sheet to catch any dripping of the custard. Set the strata in the center of the preheated oven and allow to bake for approximately 35- 45 minutes until the custard is a rich dark color and rises slightly from the pan.

  6. Carefully remove from the oven and let cool for 15 minutes before serving.

  7. Add-ins: Green chilis, mushrooms, onions, crumbled bacon, ham cubes, etc.
