Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 T maple syrup instead
  • 6-8 French bread slices, 1 inch thick. Stale is best - leave crusts on.
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups half-and-half cream
  • 1 T vanilla extract
  • 1 T orange juice or 1 t brandy-based orange liqueur (such as Grand MarnierĀ®)
  • 1 t grated orange peel
  • dash or two of cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Directions

  1. Melt butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Mix in brown sugar and maple syrup, stirring until sugar is dissolved. Pour into a 9×13 inch baking dish.

  2. Arrange bread in the baking dish in a single layer. In a small bowl, whisk together eggs, half and half, vanilla extract, orange juice, orange peel, cinnamon, and salt. Pour over the bread. Cover, and chill at least 8 hours, or overnight.

  3. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Remove the dish from the refrigerator, and bring to room temperature.

  4. Bake uncovered 20 minutes in the preheated oven, flip bread over to cook other side, bake another 20 minutes until puffed and lightly browned.

  5. Serve with sliced strawberries.
