Grandma Smith’s Chocolate Chip Cookies

Easy, cake-like cookie that kids just love.

Ingredients

  • 1-1/2 c white sugar
  • 2-1/2 c brown sugar
  • 2 c shortening
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 t soda in 1 T hot water
  • 1 t salt
  • 2 t vanilla
  • 1/2 t cream tartar
  • 1/2 to 3/4 c milk or buttermilk
  • 7-8 c flour
  • chocolate chips as desired
  • Nuts if desired
  • oatmeal if desired

Directions

  1. Cream in bowl: sugars, shortening and eggs.

  2. Add remaining ingredients except flour and chips (and other optional items).

  3. Gradually add about half the flour, then add chips and option items. Add remaining flour. Less flour for softer cookie; more flour for cake-like cookie.

  4. Drop onto ungreased baking sheets.

  5. Can be refrigerated or frozen for baking later. Cookies can be frozen.

  6. Conventional oven: Bake 325 degrees for 15 minutes or until done.

  7. Convection oven: Bake 300 degrees for 14 minutes until done.

  8. Makes about 12 dozen cookies.
