Caramel Layer Chocolate Squares

I found this in nmy recipe box, photocopied, originally written on Los Angeles Firemen’s Credit Union notepad. I have no idea where it came from!

Ingredients

  • 50 light caramels (1 pkg Kraft)
  • 2/3 c evaporated milk
  • 1 17-1/2 ounce pkg german chocolate cake mix
  • 3/4 c melted butter
  • 1 c chopped nuts
  • 6-oz package of semisweet chocolate bits

Directions

  1. Combine caramels and 1/3 c evaporated milk in a double boiler. Cook until melted.

  2. Combine cake mix, butter, nutsand 1/3 cup evaporated milk. Stir until dough holds together.

  3. Press half the dough into a greased and floured 9 × 13 inch pan.

  4. Bake at 350 degrees for 6 minutes.

  5. Sprinkle chocolate bits over baked crust then spread caramel mix over the chocolate. Crumble the reserved dough over the top.

  6. Return to oven and bake 15 to 18 minutes. cool slightly then chill for 30 minutes.

  7. Cut into bars and serve.
