Basic Stew

Takes 1 to 1 1/2 hours to cook depending on the meat chosen.

Serves 6 people

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lbs stew meat, inch squares
  • 2 TB cooking oil
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 10.5 or 10.75 oz canned beef broth
  • 5 cups of frozen stew vegetables
  • 1/4 c. cold water
  • 2 TB flour

Directions

  1. In large saucepan brown meat in hot oil. Stir in garlic, bay leaf, salt, mustard, garlic, and pepper. Add beef broth. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer till meat is nearly tender (about 30 minutes for pork or 1 1/4 hours for beef).

  2. Add vegetables. Cover and simmer about 15 minutes or until meat and vegetables are tender.

  3. Blend water and flour; stir into stew. Cook and stir until thickened and bubbly. Remove bay leaf. Make 6 servings.
