Chinese Five Spice Cookies

Chinese five spice is readily available at the Chinese grocery, or some grocery international sections

Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 cups flour
  • 2/3 cup fine chopped almonds
  • 1 Tbsp. Chinese Five Spice Powder
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 16 Tbsp. unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. almond extract
  • 1 Tbsp. milk
  • sliced almonds for garnish

Directions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, chopped almonds, five spice powder and salt.
  2. In a large bowl, beat together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add almond extract and milk and beat until combined.
  3. Add flour mixture to bowl and beat until dough begins to come together. Dough will be a little dry, but you should be able to easily press it together with fingers. Wrap dough in plastic wrap and let rest in refrigerator one hour.
  4. Roll dough into 1 inch balls, the flatten between your palms. Place one almond slice in center of each cookie. Place cookies on parchment lined pans.
  5. Bake at 350 degrees until golden, about 12 minutes. Let cool on pan 5 minutes, transfer to rack to cool completely.
