Ingredients

  • 5 cups milk, set aside 1 cup
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 pound butter (set aside 1 stick)
  • 1/2 cup Farina
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 pound Phyllo dough
  • 1/2 lemon peel, grated
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon
  • Syrup
  • 1 glass water
  • 2 glasses sugar
  • few drops of lemon juice

Directions

  1. Prepare the syrup by combining water sugar and lemon juice.

  2. Bring to a boil, lower heat and boil for 10 minutes

  3. Heat up the milk, but do not boil

  4. In mixer, beat the eggs and sugar

  5. Add the Farina, lemon juice and peel and beat well

  6. Add Farina mixture to pot with milk

  7. Dilute corn starch in the glass of cold milk that had been set aside

  8. Stir well and pour into warm milk mixture

  9. Stir over low heat until it starts to thicken and bubble.

  10. Remove from heat and stir in 1 stick of butter, until totally melted

  11. Butter 9 × 13 pan.

  12. Place 1 sheet of phyllo into pan and brush with butter

  13. Repeat with 8-10 sheets of phyllo

  14. Pour in mixture.

  15. Top with a little of the melted butter, then continue layering phyllo, butter each one.

  16. Cut into diamond shapes (but not all the way through)

  17. Bake in preheated 350 degree oven until brown.

  18. Let stand for a few minutes then douse with cooled syrup
