Red Cake

(from Brenda Ring’s recipe box)

Cook time: 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1/2 c shortening
  • 1and 1/2 c shortening
  • 2eggs
  • 1t vanilla
  • 1t baking powder
  • 1T vinegar
  • 1tsoda
  • 2T Cocoa mixed with 2oz. Red food coloring
  • 1tsalt
  • 1cup buttermilk
  • 2and 1/4 cups flour
  • ICING:
  • 5T flour
  • 1c butter
  • 1c milk
  • 1c granulated sugar
  • 1tvanilla

Directions

  1. Cream shortening,sugar and eggs.

  2. make a paste with cocoa and color, and add to mix.

  3. Add salt, buttermilk with flour and vanilla.

  4. Add vinegar and soda. Do not beat hard; just stir in.

  5. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes (2 or 3 pans.)

  6. ICING DIRECTIONS:

  7. Cook 5T flour in a cup of milk until thick. Then cool. Cream 1cof gran sugar with 1cup butter and 1t vanilla until fluffy. Add to flour and milk, and beat well.
