Sutter’s Gold Bread Pudding

Serves 8 people

Ingredients

  • 3 cups milk
  • 3 eggs, slightly beaten
  • 3 cups toasted bread cubes
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 1 Tbsp. grated lemon peel
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 cup seedless raisins
  • Grated nutmeg
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 Tbsp. cornstarch
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 Tbsp. butter
  • 1/2 tsp. grated lemon peel
  • 2 Tbsp. lemon juice

Directions

  1. Combine milk and eggs; pour over bread. Stir in 1/2 cup sugar, melted butter, 1 tablespoon lemon peel, salt and raisins. Pour into 2- quart buttered baking dish; sprinkle with nutmeg.
  2. Place dish in shallow pan; pour hot water around dish 1 inch deep. Bake at 350 degrees for 50 to 55 minutes or until knife inserted in center comes out clean. Serve warm or cold.
  3. In small saucepan combine sugar and cornstarch. Add water; blend. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thickened and clear. Stir in butter, lemon peel and juice. Serve warm over pudding.
