Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter or margarine
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 cup regular or lowfat evaporated milk
  • 4 large Granny Smith or Golden Delicious apples, peeled , cored and cut into 1/2-inch slices

Directions

  1. In large, heavy-bottomed skillet over medium-high melt butter; add sugar. Stir rapidly just until mixture is golden brown (1-2 minutes). Stir in cinnamon (mix with 1 tsp. sugar to prevent clumping.)
  2. Remove pan from heat; add milk. Return to heat, stirring, until hardened sugar dissolves and mixture looks like caramel (2-3 minutes).
  3. Add apples and coat with caramel. Cover skillet, reduce heat and simmer until apples are just tender (about 5 minutes).
  4. With slotted spoon, transfer apples to serving bowl. Over high heat bring caramel to a boil until thickened (1-2 minutes). Pour over apples. Serve.
