German Tea Squares

Ingredients

  • 6 eggs
  • 3-3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 3-3/4 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1-1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 3/4 tsp ground cloves
  • 3/4 tsp ground ginger
  • 1-1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)
  • powdered sugar

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.

  2. Grease two 10×15 baking pans.

  3. Combine dry ingredients except for nuts and set aside.

  4. In a mixing bowl, beat the eggs until frothy.

  5. Mix in brown sugar and beat until pale and creamy.

  6. Stir dry ingredients into wet ingredients.

  7. Stir in nuts (optional).

  8. Spread in pans.

  9. Bake for 20 minutes.

  10. Change shelves after approximately twelve minutes if two oven shelves are used.

  11. Create a thin glaze with powdered sugar and water.

  12. Spoon or brush glaze over warm bars.

  13. Cut bars into lozenge shapes.

  14. Store in an airtight container.
