Old Southern Biscuits

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup vegetable shortening
  • 2 cups self-rising flour
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • Melted butter (optional)

Directions

  1. Cut shortening into flour with a pastry blender or fork until crumbly. Add buttermilk, stirring the mixture just until moistened.
  2. Pat dough to 1/2-inch thickness; cut with a 2-inch round cutter. Place on a lightly greased baking sheet.
  3. Bake at 425 degrees for 14 minutes or until golden. Brush the hot biscuits with melted butter, if desired.
