Asparagus au Gratin

Ingredients

  • 2 lb. fresh asparagus
  • 1/2 lb. pkg. American cheese, diced
  • 1/2 cup top milk
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 cup fine dry bread crumbs

Directions

  1. Cut off tough lower part of asparagus. Place in deep narrow pot, or in coffee percolator, with tips in air, hot water around lower ends. Cover.

  2. Steam asparagus about 15 minutes, or until tips are tender. Drain and place in oblong greased baking dish.
  3. Heat diced cheese, milk and salt in top of double boiler, stirring until cheese is melted. Pour over asparagus in baking dish. Sprinkle with crumbs. Brown under a low flame or in moderately hot oven (375 degrees).
