Apple Strudel

Ingredients

  • 2 cups sifted flour
  • 3 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 2 Tbsp. shortening
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 2 Tsp. melted butter
  • 3 cups pared, chopped apples
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • Frosting:
  • [2 cups confectioners' sugar
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 Tbsp. butter, softened
  • 3 Tbsp. cream
  • 1/4 cup chopped nuts

Directions

  1. Sift together flour, baking powder, salt and two tablespoons of sugar. Cut in shortening and add milk to make soft dough, knead 25 to 30 times.

  2. Roll dough 1/4 inch thick. Brush with melted butter; cover with chopped apples.

  3. Mix the 2/3 cup sugar with cinnamon and sprinkle over apples.

  4. Roll up like a jelly roll, form into a semi-circle on a greased cookie sheet.

  5. Bake at 425 degrees for 25 to 35 minutes. While warm, spread with frosting made of confectioners’ sugar, cinnamon, butter and cream.

  6. Sprinkle chopped nuts over the frosting. Cut roll into 1-inch slices and serve warm or cold. This is an American version of apple strudel.
