Apple Date Dumplings

Ingredients

  • Pastry for Two-crust Pie
  • 6 baking apples (each about 3 inches in diameter), pared and cored
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar (packed)
  • 3 Tbsp. Chopped Dates or cut-up Pitted Dates
  • 2 Tbsp. chopped nuts
  • 1/4 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp. milk
  • Caramel Date Fluff:
  • 1 cup chilled whipping cream
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar (packed)
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1/2 cup chopped or cut-up pitted dates.

Directions

  1. Heat oven to 425 degrees. prepare pastry as directed except-roll one half into 14-inch circle. with pastry wheel, cut circle into three equal wedges, Repeat with remaining pastry.

  2. Place apple on each wedge. mix brown sugar, dates, nuts, nutmeg and cinnamon; fill center of each apple. Moist edges of pastry; fold pastry up over apples and prick tops.

  3. Place dumplings in ungreased baking dish, 11 1/2 × 71/2 × 1 1/2 inches. Blend egg and milk; brush over pastry.

  4. Bake about 40 minutes or until apples are tender. Serve warm or cool topped with Caramel Date Fluff. If desired, garnish with walnut-stuffed dates.

  5. Caramel Date Fluff: In chilled bowl, beat whipping cream, brown sugar and vanilla until stiff. Fold in 1/2 cup Chopped dates or cut-up pitted dates.
