  • 1 1/2 Tbsp. flour
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 Tbsp. butter
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • Dumplings:
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1 1/4 Tbsp. shortening
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 3 to 4 apples, peeled and sliced
  • Sugar
  • Cinnamon
  • Butter

Directions

  1. To make the sauce:

  2. In a medium-size saucepan, mix together the sugar and flour, gradually add water and stir until smooth; add butter and stir.

  3. Cook over medium heat until creamy; stir in vanilla. Pour into a medium-size baking dish and set aside.

  4. To make the dumplings:

  5. Combine flour, salt, shortening, baking powder and milk; stir to a soft dough. Roll out to a 1/4-inch thickness and cut in rounds about 4 inches in diameter.

  6. Place 10 apple slices on each round. Sprinkle each round with 2 Tbsp. sugar, 1/2 tsp. cinnamon and a dot of butter. Fold dough over and pinch edges together; drop into sauce. Bake it in moderate (350 degree) oven about 40 minutes.
