Baked Beans with Ground beef

Ingredients

  • 1 to 1 1/2 lb. ground beef
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1 sweet bell pepper, cored, seeded, and finely chopped (optional)1/4 tsp. black pepper
  • 1 to 2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce (optional)
  • 1/4 tsp. hot sauce (optional)
  • 2 Tbsp. vinegar (optional)
  • 1 Tbsp. soy sauce (optional)
  • 1 to 2 15 oz. cans pork and beans
  • 1/2 cup barbecue sauce (optional)
  • 1/2 to 1 tsp. salt to taste
  • 1/4 to 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup to 1/2 bottle ketchup
  • 2 tbsp. spicy brown mustard or 1 Tbsp. prepared mustard
  • 2 Tbsp. shortening (optional if not using bacon)
  • 6 to 8 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled (optional)

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 9 × 13 × 2 inch casserole dish with nonstick cooking spray.

  2. In a 4 to 5 quart Dutch oven, brown the ground beef, onion and bell pepper. Add the pork and beans, barbecue sauce (if using), ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, and brown sugar to the ground beef mixture. Simmer for 5 minutes.

  3. Transfer mixture to the prepared casserole dish. Crumble bacon over the casserole and cover with aluminum foil. Bake 45 minutes. Remove foil an continue to bake for an additional 10 minutes. Let the casserole stand 10 minutes before serving.
