Baking Soda Biscuits

Ingredients

  • 2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 cup vegetable shortening
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk

Directions

  1. Sift together flour, baking soda and salt into large bowl. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse meat. Make a well in center of flour mixture; add all the buttermilk at one time. Stir to make soft dough.

  2. Turn onto a lightly floured board ad knead about 30 seconds. Pat or roll to 1/2-inch thickness. Cut with floured 2-inch biscuit cutter.

  3. Place on ungreased baking sheet. Bake in 450 degree oven 12 minutes or until lightly browned.

  4. makes about 12 biscuits.

  5. Can be made ahead and frozen to warm in microwave later.
