Basic Golden Apple Pie

Ingredients

  • 6 to 7 medium (about 2 1/2 lbs.) Golden Delicious apples
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 Tbsp. flour
  • 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. ground ginger
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. ground mace or cardamom
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • Pastry for 2-crust (9- inch) pie
  • 2 Tbsp. butter or margarine

Directions

  1. Pare apples, if desired. Core and thinly slice apples to equal 7 cups.

  2. Combine dry ingredients. Stir in apples and vanilla; place I pastry-lined 9-inch pie plate. Dot with butter; adjust top crust. Seal and flute edges; cut vents and brush with cream or milk.

  3. Bake at 425 degrees for 50 to 60 minutes, or until apples are tender. If necessary, cover edges with foil partway through baking time to prevent over-browning.
