Basic White Sauce

Ingredients

  • 1 cup milk
  • 3 Tbsp. all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/8 tsp. pepper
  • 3 Tbsp. butter or margarine

Directions

  1. Combine all ingredients, except butter, in 4 cup glass measure; beat with rotary beater until smooth. Add butter.

  2. Microwave for 3 minutes on high. Beat well and continue cooking for 1 to 1 1/2 minutes on high or until thickened (about 175 degrees). Beat lightly and serve.

  4. Variations:

  5. Use 2 Tbsp. all-purpose flour and 2 Tbsp. butter or margarine in basic recipe for thinner sauce.

  6. Use 1/4 cup all-purpose flour and 1/4 cup butter or margarine in basic recipe, for thicker sauce.

  7. Add 1 green onion, chopped, and dash nutmeg with butter in basic recipe.

  8. Stir in 2 hard-cooked eggs, finely chopped, when basic sauce has been cooked. Microwave for an additional 1 to 1 1/2 minutes, on Roast, or until hot.

  9. Add 1/2 cup shredded process American cheese and 1/4 tsp. Worcestershire sauce with butter in basic sauce. Microwave for 3 minutes on Roast. Beat well and continue cooking for 2 1/2 to 3 minutes on Roast or until thickened (about 175 degrees). Beat lightly and serve.
