Bavarian Pot Roast

Ingredients

  • 3 to 4 lb. beef chuck roast
  • 2 Tbsp. shortening
  • salt and pepper
  • 2 cans (8 oz. each) tomato sauce
  • 1 Tbsp. vinegar
  • 2 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. ginger
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 2/3 cup chopped onion

Directions

  1. Brown meat in hot shortening. Drain excess far from pan if necessary. Season meat to taste with salt and pepper.

  2. Combine tomato sauce, vinegar, sugar, one tso. salt, cinnamon, ginger, bay leaf and onion and mix well. Pour over meat.

  3. Cover tightly. Bake in a preheated 350 degrees oven about 2 1/2 to 3 hours or until meat is tender.

  4. If necessary, skim fat from sauce and serve sauce over meat.
