Taco Bell’s Chalupa

Ingredients

  • Tortillas:
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp vegetable shortening
  • 1 cup milk
  • Oil, for frying
  • Filling:
  • 1 tbsp dried onion flakes
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 lb. ground beef
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1 tbsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp salt
  • Some oil for frying
  • For Garnishing:
  • Sour cream
  • Shredded lettuce
  • Cheddar or Monterey Jack
  • Tomato, diced

Directions

  1. In a bowl, mix the flour, baking powder and salt.

  2. Add the vegetable shortening and mix. Then add the milk and continue mixing.

  3. Cut the dough into 8 equal portions, and then shape them into 8 6-inch tortillas.

  4. Deep fry the tortillas until golden brown. Set aside to cool.

  5. Start making the filling. Place the onion flakes in the water and set aside for 5 minutes.

  6. Mix the rest of the filling ingredients (except the oil) in a bowl until well combined.

  7. Add in the onion with the water and continue mixing.

  8. Heat the oil in a skillet and then cook the entire beef mixture until the beef browns.

  9. To assemble the Chalupas, place the following by layers in the tortilla: some of the cooked beef mixture, sour cream, lettuce, cheese and tomatoes.

  10. Serve on a plate.
