Ingredients

  • One 1/4 oz package dried yeast - regular or quick rise
  • 2 Tbsp warm water (110F)
  • 1/4 c sugar
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1/3 c butter, softened
  • 1 c hot milk
  • 3/4 c cold water
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 5 1/2 - 6 c all-purpose flour
  • *
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 3 Tbsp grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tsp oregano
  • 1/2 tsp granulated garlic powder

Directions

  1. Grease and set aside 2 standard loaf pans (glass preferred).

  2. In small bowl, combine the yeast and warm water. Stir to blend and set aside.

  3. Combine the sugar, salt, and butter in large bowl.

  4. Add the hot milk and stir until the butter is melted.

  5. Add the cold water and let cool until the mixture is lukewarm.

  6. Add the yeast mixture and the beaten egg.

  7. Gradually add enough flour to make a soft dough. This will take ~5 cups; the other 1/2 – 1 c can be used to flour the kneading surface.

  8. Use your hands to mix the dough in the bowl and incorporate as much of the flour into the dough as possible.

  9. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead until the dough is smooth and elastic. Do this by folding the edges of the dough toward the center and pushing the dough away from you with the heel of your hands, rotating it on the board as you continue to knead. This should take 5 – 10 minutes.

  10. Divide the dough into equal pieces. If you plan to freeze, wrap in plastic wrap and freeze for later.

  11. Place dough on greased baking sheet, and allow to rise until doubled.

  12. Preheat oven to 350F.

  13. Form dough into some shape that will fit into prepared loaf pans

  14. For added fun, add topping: Brush loaves with egg. Sprinkle each loaf with 1/2 the oregano, Parmesan, and garlic powder mixture. Egg may cause sticking when removing, so be sure to use a spatula to separate from the pan.

  15. Bake at 350F for ~25 minutes, or until the loaf is golden brown.
