Buttermilk Bisquits

Serves 12 people

  • 2 C flour
  • 1/2 t salt
  • 2 t baking powder
  • 1/2 t baking soda
  • 1/2 C shortening
  • 2/3 C buttermilk


  1. Place flour in medium mixing bowl and stir in salt, baking powder,and baking soda.

  2. Add the shortening and break it up using a pastry cutter or 2 knives until pieces are the size of peas.

  3. Pour in almost all of the buttermilk. Add the rest if needed when mixing all together. Use a fork or handle of wooden spoon to stir until dough sticks together and clears sides.

  4. Turn out dough on floured surface and knead 8-10 times.

  5. Roll out to 1/2 inch thick and cut with 2 1/2 inch cutter. Don’t twist cutter.

  6. Transfer bisquits to ungreased baking sheet. Bake @ 425 degrees F for 12 mins.
