Quick and Easy Sauerbraten

No need to marinade overnight. The gingersnaps are used to thicken the marinade to make a gravy. You can also use cornstarch or flour if you don’t have gingersnaps.

Ingredients

  • 3 lbs boneless shoulder roast
  • 1 c. water
  • 1 c. red wine vinegar
  • dash of pepper
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 16 gingersnaps

Directions

  1. Season the roast with pepper, place in pan and roast, uncovered in 475 F oven until both sides are browned and turning once about 4-5 minutes each side.

  2. Remove from oven, pour vinegar and water over roast. Arrange onion slices on top, add bay leaves to the pot liquid. Cover and return to oven. Reduce heat to 350 F and cook 1 ½ hours or until tender.

  3. Add ginger snaps and cook ½ hour longer. Additional water may be added for thinner gravy
