Poppy Seed Cake (from scratch)

I haven’t made this my self, but I have eaten the Motl’s cake and it is delish!
The Reznicek/Motl families swear by this recipe. I have a much easier recipe also in this book.

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup poppy seed
  • 1 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 1/4 cup shortening
  • 2 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 cups flour
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 6 egg whites, well beaten
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla

Directions

  1. Cream shortening and add sugar, mix well.

  2. Add milk and poppy seed, alternating with dry ingredients.

  3. Fold in beaten egg whites and vanilla.

  4. Bake in 3, 9 inch layer pans at 375 degrees for 35 to 40 minutes.

  5. Ice with one of the 7-Minute Icings also in this book.
