Dutch Oven Chocolate-Cherry Cobbler

(from cokerlj’s recipe box)

I like more crust or dough…you can use another box of cake mix and leave the other ingredients the same and it will still be good and serve a few more people.

Ingredients

  • 3 cans cherry pie filling
  • 1 6 ounce can apple juice
  • 1 box chocolate cake mix (or 2 boxes)
  • 1 stick margarine
  • 1/2 cup sugar (only if you like your desserts extra sweet, I think it sweet enough without this extra sugar)

Directions

  1. Line Dutch oven with foil and preheat.

  2. Dump in all three cans of cherries. Add the apple juice and stir slightly (you can use just water…the cherry filling needs to be thinned slightly).

  3. Sprinkle entire box(s) of cake mix over the cherries. The cake mix should be dry, no eggs or anything else.

  4. Cut up one stick of margarine and place around on top of the dry cake mix.

  5. Sprinkle 1/2 cup sugar over all. (the extra sugar is optional)

  6. Cover. Place very close to fire.

  7. Place over 10-12 coals. Put 14 -16 coals on top of lid.

  8. This will take about 45 minutes to cook. You will want to check it after about 30 minutes and probably turn it around or rotate it so the other side is close to the fire.
